  • The Senior Network Engineer is responsible for the design and implementation of complex communications networks, including wired and wireless data networks, voice networks, and service provider connectivity. Provides support to IT groups and customers for the most complex technical communications networks. This position will independently implement network projects and participate in large IT projects.

    The Network Design and Engineering unit is responsible for the design and health of the communications networks at Vanderbilt University. This unit works closely with other information technology teams and customers to meet the voice and data needs of the university. This group's responsibilities include wired and wireless network connectivity, support of the high-performance research network, data center networking, Internet, I2 (research), and service provider services.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Participate in network design and implementation (40%):

    • Participate in the development of an effective network design and strategy.

    • Analyze network needs for major projects, including costs and utilization.

    • Recommend equipment and software configurations.

    • Provide technical guidance to customers and departmental staff.

    • Provide input on the development and deployment of a network automation solutions.

    • Configure and test new network components.

    • Follow appropriate processes and change management.

    • Document modifications to network.

    Perform network monitoring (20%):

    • Monitor and maintain communications network operations.

    • Perform complex testing and analysis of network facilities.

    • Make recommendations for tuning and balancing networks.

    • Analyze error statistics and implement preventative measures.

    • Establish automated processes to monitor applications and minimize failures or degraded performance, and alert administrators to problems.

    Troubleshoot and resolve complex network problems (40%):

    • Provide advanced network troubleshooting.

    • Provide effective solutions to network problems while minimizing downtime.

    • Investigate software-related problems and resolve those within the scope of authority.

    • Document problems and solutions.

    Supervisory Relationships

    This position does not have supervisory responsibility, this position reports administratively and functionally to the Associate Director for Network Design and Engineering.

    Education and Certifications

    • Bachelor's Degree is necessary

    • Cisco CCNP certification is necessary

    • One (1) of the following certifications is necessary:

    • Aruba Mobility - ACMA, ACMP, Aruba Campus Access - ACA, ACP, Aruba Clearpass - ACCA, ACCP, or Audiocodes Session Boarder Controller

    • The following certifications are preferred:

    • ComptTIA Linux+

    • DevNet Associate

    • Cisco CCNP (Enterprise and/or Collaboration)

    • DevNet Professional

    • Aruba Mobility - ACMA, ACMP

    • Aruba Clearpass - ACCA, ACCP

    • Audiocodes Session Boarder Controller

    • Audiocodes Route Manager

    Qualifications

    • 5 years of advanced system configuration and network support experience is necessary

    • Linux knowledge, including shell scripting is necessary

    • 2 years of coding and scripting (Python, Bash, etc) experience is preferred

    • Database and SQL experience is preferred
