    Position Overview:

    SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory seeks two Research Associates within the Accelerator Directorate with a focus on free-electron laser physics. SLAC is one of the world's premier accelerator research laboratories. The research associates would work on diverse accelerator projects, including the LCLS-II x-ray free-electron laser (FEL). The successful candidates will perform experiments, simulations and theoretical work within the LCLS-II project.

    Possible research subjects include: x-ray regenerative amplifiers and other cavity-based FEL schemes, self-seeding studies for high repetition rate XFELs, multibunch operation at LCLS-II, attosecond pulse generation and shaping.

    Given the nature of this position, SLAC is open to on-site and hybrid work options.

    Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

    • Develop new FEL operation modes to enable new science at LCLS-II.

    • Improve machine performance and reliability.

    • Advance knowledge of FEL physics.

    Note: This is a two-year fixed term position with the possibility of extension. Research Associates are engaged with the design, support, operation and/or scientific exploitation of the major programs of the laboratory, under the guidance of their faculty or Senior Staff Scientist / Distinguished Staff Scientist supervisor. They are expected to work with a significant degree of independence on one or more specific tasks in support of the research program, frequently interacting with the laboratory's scientific community.

    To be successful in this position you will bring:

    • Ph.D. in Accelerator Physics or related field.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience with X-ray free electron lasers and related physics.

    • Experience with numerical simulations of particle accelerators.

    • Experience with DOE funded national lab research.

    The expected pay range for this position is $70,000 to $100,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
