Tweeting to Get a Job

You’ve sent out resumes, made calls, scoured the want ads, even created a video resume. Still no job. Then someone told you they got a great job by tweeting. You’re ready to give it a try, but be warned, as with everything else, there are rules.

Sound like a pro. Make sure your tweets relate to the industry you want to hire into. Be current, topical and interesting. Comment on the latest industry developments. Tweet on new books that pertain to your field. If you’re written articles covering your industry, include links to them. Share your experience at industry seminars, trade shows, conferences. Comment on what you’ve learned. If you’re a speaker or presenter, tweet about your presentation.

Use Hashtags. These provide plenty of job listings and job-hunting advice. Use #jobs, #recruiting, #jobadvice, #jobposting, #jobhunt and #jobsearch. Focus on the specific hashtags like #prjobs or #administrativejobs. Immerse yourself in job-related chats, like #jobhuntchat, #careerchat, #internchat and #hirefriday for career guidance. If there’s an industry conference on the horizon, join with attendees using their hashtag. You don’t have to attend the conference to join in on the conversation.

Link up with recruiters and employees. If you’ve targeted a specific company, find out who the recruiters are for that firm. Interact with them. The same holds true for HR managers and employees. Seek out things you have in common, like seminars and trade shows you’ve attended. The company may not be hiring right now, but if a spot should open up, you’ll likely be among the first to be contacted.
