Look for Natural Ways to Handle Your Stress

Posted by

I remember a number of years ago, I met with a young lady who had enrolled in a stress management class that I would be teaching. As a part of my pre-class interview, I asked her why she wanted to take the course. She said, “My job in accounting can be very stressful and every morning around 11 a.m., I start to get a headache. When that happens, I reach into my desk drawer and take a couple of these.” Without saying another word she reached into her desk drawer and pulled out one of the biggest bottles of aspirin I ever saw. It was the industrial size! She went on to say, “After I come back from lunch, my stomach is usually upset, so I take a tablespoon of Pepto Bismol .” Then she reached back into her desk drawer and pulled out a gigantic bottle of pink Pepto Bismol to show me.

Ready for a New Approach
I began to see that stress was causing her some real concerns. I must say, for a moment, I was speechless. I thought to myself how can such a young person be so reliant on drugs to help her get through the day? The aspirin alone, was eating holes in her stomach. She knew that if she kept on this path she was headed for some major health problems and it was now time to try something different.

Learn from Others
The sad fact is that many people today do not realize the damage they are doing to themselves by allowing stress to control their lives. When they let a stressful job or relationship cause them to react by trying to artificially take control of their emotions, they are creating even more problems. By taking a stress reduction class, an individual can begin to learn techniques that will help them naturally take care of day to day problems they are experiencing. Another benefit is they will meet other individuals who are also experiencing stress and learn from them how to manage stress in their lives.
