Lie if you have to

You’ve heard before that honesty is the best policy but when looking for a job that might not always be the case. Sometimes to get past prospective and into employee status you are going to have to lie. It’s a sad fact but an interview is one of those times when you can’t keep quiet so bending the truth is better than telling it like it is. You just need to know how to spin it.

For example:

1. What was it like working for you last employer?

The Truth I hated my last boss. The girl was a self centered moron with no experience who lacked leadership skills and communicated like a child. The

Spin We brought different things to the table. She challenged me and I rose to the occasion. By working with her I learned to step out of my comfort zone and confront adversity head on.

2. How do you handle group projects?

The Truth Group projects freak me out. I can’t get a word in edge wise and I end up doing other people’s work while they take the credit.

The Spin The success of the individual comes from the success of the team. My work ethic is exemplary and I have numerous ideas to share with the group.

3. Why did you leave your last job?

The Truth I kept oversleeping and coming in late after playing X-Box all night and looking up random facts on Wikipedia while at work.

The Spin My priorities needed to be reevaluated. I’m a strategic thinker with a desire for deeper knowledge on many subjects. I want to find a position that will put my skills to better use.

4. What do you see yourself doing in 10 years?

The Truth Marrying well, letting my spouse work, and staying home with the kids. Or Lose the noose, drop off the grid, and travel around the world.

The Spin I would like to advance in the company and maybe even head up my own division.

Lies are like potato chips; you can't get away with just one. In order to keep the job you’ll have to keep up the lie you told. In other words, don’t bad mouth your last boss the second you start your new job or you will instantly lose all credibility.
