How To Make Your Thank You Note Stand Out

Writing a thank you note

Now that Thanksgiving is over, I thought it was a good time to talk about giving thanks in other ways. When you are looking for a job, sending thank you notes is important. You should send a thank you note to any interviewer and also after receiving any sort of assistance in your job search.

If you have never written a professional thank you note, or you need a quick review, here are the main things you should include in your thank you note.

Address it to the interviewer – Be sure to use the interviewer's name. Using form thank you notes is tacky and almost as bad as not sending one at all.

Brief statement of interview position – Make sure that you mention the job title in the thank you note. Be aware that the same interviewer may have several job openings. Don't make them have to think about who you are and which job you were looking for.

Your elevator pitch – Although you don't want to write a lot, be sure to recap why you are perfect for the company. This is where having a quick elevator pitch really comes in handy.

When you will follow up – You should close the note by saying that you will check back with them in a couple of days. This will take some pressure off of the follow up call and lets the interviewer know that you are serious about the opening.

Thank you notes are important. Not only do they give the hiring manager a refresher of your qualifications and make a great impression, they also help you become a better professional.

Do you regularly send thank you notes? Why or why not? Please share your thoughts and tips in the comment section.
