Give Your Work Wardrobe an Overhaul With A Closet Clean Out

Give your work wardrobe a face lift with a total closet makeover. Here's how -

Now that the weather is warming up, I find that I can't seem to get over the idea that spring is the time for getting rid of the old and organizing everything else. Lately, I have been working on getting my closets in shape. It started because I was frustrated that I never seem to have anything exciting to wear and I got tired of always wearing the same couple of outfits over and over. If you have to dress in a certain way for work or need to have a few interview outfits for your job search, I'm sure you can feel my pain. Nothing is more frustrating than having an overflowing closet and nothing to wear. I decided that it was time to buy a few new things. But, before I did, I knew it was time to get my closets organized so that I could to just buy exactly what I needed to round things out.

Now that my closets are (mostly) cleaned out, I realized that I have more clothes than I thought, and I really only need to buy a few things. Not only did it save on my budget, but now getting dressed is super easy. If you want to update your work wardrobe and get organized at the same time, here are some tips to help:

  • Empty everything out of your closet – This one is hard to do, but you just have to commit a few hours to it. Take everything out of your closet. You can sort your piles of stuff by season, and start by just focusing on the current season. Once winter is over, you can pack up the winter items and store them in a storage box or a guest room closet. Make sure that you allot the best space in your closet to the clothes that you are actually going to wear now.

  • Try it all on – Once you have everything out, try each piece on. Be objective and decide if the pieces fit, flatter your figure or make you feel good. If they don't do any of these things, set them to the side. I know there is a tendency to hold onto things that don't fit anymore, in the hopes that one day they will. Unless you have just had a baby, there is no point in holding onto clothes you can't wear. Anything that is stained or worn out, throw it away. The goal is to fill your closet with clothes that fit and look nice.

  • Look for outfits – While you are trying things on, look for outfits. Try to come up with several uses for each item. Think about what pieces you could add to an existing outfit to change the look. Think about where you go during a week and what sorts of outfits you will need for those activities. When I put together outfits, I try to think a little outside of my comfort zone. If I didn't, I would end up in yoga pants everyday. Once you have an idea of the best outfits, then you're ready for the next step-

  • Make a list of what you need – You're bound to have some places where you need a few new things. Accessories or basic layers are always areas where I need some help. Once you have a list of things that you need, you can start shopping for those specific things rather than just buying on impulse. This way, you can be sure that the clothes you add to your newly organized closet are things you will actually use, rather than ending up with pieces that don't fit.

It can be hard to part with some of your favorite clothes. If you are finding it difficult to get rid of just a few pieces, go ahead and hang on to them, but push them all the way in the back. However, if you are attached to everything in your closet, you might have to practice tough love. In the end, when your closet is filled with clothes that fit and look good on you, you can save so much time every morning and, looking more pulled together, is a bonus.
