Working After Retirement

Posted by

Some people can retire and fill their day with hobbies, volunteer work and family. Other people get bored and restless. Sometimes no matter how much you’ve looked forward to retirement, you find yourself missing the social interaction and extra money. If you get a part time job, say in sales, what would be the benefits of working again?

1. It would give you a reason and purpose to get up in the morning. Some people suffer from loneliness and depression once they retire from the workforce. Also by getting a part time job, it will enable you to use less of your retirement savings, leaving more to grow towards the future. To help you decide how much you want to work, spend some time thinking about it. What would your salary requirements need to be to supplement your income? How many hours will you need to work? What about benefits?

2. It will help keep your mind and body active. Work feeds on energy, enthusiasm and the zest for life. By going from full time work to part time work, you will function better day to day than people who just stop working. If you aren’t ready to work a permanent job, you could sign up at a temporary employment agency. That way you can work when and where you want and still keep yourself in the workforce. It’s been proven that people who work into later decades often outlive people who have fully retired. Some people spend 20 years or so in retirement, so make sure you choose something that you’re going to enjoy working at.

3. Shifting your perspective in a new direction. You now can do something you want to do, not something you have to do. This can be the beginning of a new and rewarding career. You can consider a passion that you may not have pursued for one reason or another that can lead to another type of career. Now you can change direction and do something you have always dreamed about which would make it more than just a paycheck. Although even a little extra income can help with bills, doing something you have always wanted to do makes it totally worthwhile.

4. You could start that small business you always dreamed about. Research the market. Consider all the aspects of your own business like taxes, accounting and zoning. Make sure it’s something you can afford to do since a lot of small businesses fail. Just don’t
jeopardize your retirement security by using life savings and your house to finance a new business. You’ll also be tied down and won’t be able to just get up and go. Be sure that it’s something that you won’t get bored with.

All in all, if you’re going to work after retirement, look for something that’s fun and rewarding. You’re never too old to change your direction or do something you always wanted to do.

If you are retired and have found a part time job or have suggestions on finding work after retirement, please let me hear from you.
